What is the Pharmacy Specialists Accreditation Board (PSAB)?
Who does it comprise of?
Provide 3 details about the chairman of PSAB.

A

PSAB:

  1. not less than 6 registered pharmacists
  2. chairman and members appointed by Minister
  3. up to 3 year term, eligible for re-appointment
  4. may appoint committees to assist in its function

Chairman, PSAB:

  1. Appointed from among members of PSAB by Minister
  2. Preside Board meetings (be in the position of authority in a meeting or other gathering.)
  3. Has a casting vote in an event of equality of votes in determining an issue / question (final say)

A

During PSAB meetings:

  1. Min. 3 board members at any meeting
    a. Chairperson presides
    b. If chairperson absent, the board members need to choose one board member to preside
  2. Board may appoint one or more committees of suitable members to assist it in carrying out its functions

A

Functions of PSAB:

  1. Determine qualifications, experience and other conditions for specialists registration
  2. Define specialties in the practice of pharmacy
    a. Cardiology, critical care, geriatric, infectious disease, oncology, paediatric, psychiatric
  3. Accredit training programmes to be recognized to qualify for specialists registration
  4. Certify persons having qualifications for specialists registration
  5. Recommend to Council (SPC) programmes for CPE of specialist pharmacists
  6. Advise Council (SPC) on matters related to specialists registration

What are the criteria for specialist registration?
OR What is the eligbility for specialist registration?

A

Eligibility for specialist registration (need to have ALL):

  1. Fully registered pharmacists
  2. Holds a valid practising certificate (PC)
  3. Currently practising in Singapore
  4. Postgraduate qualification recognised by PSAB e.g. PharmD by NUS
  5. Valid Specialty certification (in existing 7 specialties) recognised by PSAB – sit for board exam (theory)
  6. 2 year residency – 1yr full time residency training in broad-based pharmacotherapy recognised by PSAB AND 1yr full time residency training in specialty applied forand recognized by PSAB
  7. 1 year of specialty practice experience in specialty applied for (after residency training)

What is the process for specialist registration?

A

Process for Specialist Registration:

  1. Pharmacist submits application form with all required documents to PSAB, then SPC
  2. PSAB – issue a certificate of eligibility for specialist registration (specialist accreditation)
  3. SPC
    a. register applicant in register of specialists
    b. Issues a specialist certificate of registration in that branch of pharmacy (specialist registration) & practising certificate (PC)
    Note: PSAB checks for eligibility but SPC provides the certificate
