wk10 - neck protocol Flashcards
What are the effects of the Neck Protocol?
· Relaxes & realigns the muscles that surround the cervical spine
· Reduces pressure ont eh cervical spine, scapula, and shoulder joint
· By reducing pressure on these structures, proper alignment of tissues can be maintained to enable normal mobility & function of the neck & shoulder
· Facilitates qi & blood circulation through the UB & GB meridians
True or False: The Neck Protocol is almost always performed with the Upper Limb Protocol. Both protocols play a role in treating neck & upper limb issues.
True
What are the clinical applications or indications for the Neck Protocol?
· Neck pain · Stiff neck · Disc degeneration / compression / herniation · Arthritis · Shoulder pain / injuries
What are the 7 steps of the Neck Protocol?
1) Pinch / Grasp posterior neck below occiput (3-5x)
2) Grasp trapezius one side at a time: posterior neck to shoulder (3x)
3) Forearm Push traps: neck to shoulder (3-5x)
4) Round Rub along each trapezius: base of skull, down neck, and over shoulder (3x)
5) Round Rub with thumb: medial scapula border to GB 20 (3x)
6) Plucking of traps (3-5x)
7) Palm-edge Hammering on traps
What is the benefit of step 1: Pinch / Grasp posterior neck below occiput?
· Move qi & blood through UB & GB channels
· Relax spasm & tension in posterior neck muscles
What is the benefit of step 2: Grasp trapezius one side at a time from posterior neck to shoulder?
· Move qi & blood through UB & GB channels
· Relax spasm & tension in trapezius, posterior neck muscles, and levator scapulae
What is the benefit of step 3: Forearm Push traps from neck to shoulder?
· Move qi & blood through GB channel
· Relax spasm & tension in trapezius & levator scapulae
What is the benefit of step 4: Round Rub along each trapezius from base of skull, down neck, and over shoulder?
· Move qi & blood through UB & GB channels
· Relax spasm & tension in trapezius, posterior neck muscles, and levator scapuale
What is the benefit of step 5: Round Rub with thumb from medial scapula border to GB 20?
· Move qi & blood through UB & GB channels
· Relax spasm & tension in trapezius, rhomboids, levator scapulae, and posterior neck muscles
What is the benefit of step 6: Plucking of traps?
· Strongly break stagnation & move qi through the GB channels
· Relax trapezius
What is the benefit of step 7: Palm-edge Hammering on traps?
· Relax tightness in traps & levator scapulae
· Move qi in the UB & GB channels
How do you perform step 1: Pinch / Grasp posterior neck below occiput?
· Stand at patient’s side
· Use web between thumb & index finger to pinch along posterior spine for the length of neck
· Start from occiput and move inferiorly
How do you perform step 2: Grasp trapezius one side at a time from posterior neck to shoulder?
· Stand at patient’s side, your front leg leading the motion
· Work side opposite to you
· Use finger tips on neck, whole hand on shoulder
· Grip gets wider once you’re at the base of neck
How do you perform step 3: Forearm Push traps from neck to shoulder?
· Stand behind patient
· With palms facing up, place forearm on traps at base of neck
· Press straight down, roll palm in & down towards patient’s head, then wipe out
· Motion is down, roll, wipe
How do you perform step 4: Round Rub along each trapezius from base of skull, down neck, and over shoulder?
· Stand at patient’s side, slightly towards their front body
· Thumb pointed in direction of round rub
· Move from your elbow
· Supporting hand on forehead, then front of shoulder (or brace their head against your chest)
