wk1/ c3 (referencing) Flashcards
Week 1 - Concept 3
Referencing
Why reference?
As outlined in the Think Education: Academic Writing Guide, referencing is used for three reasons
-3-
- indicate to the reader the sources of your information and background ideas
- show that your argument/s are properly supported
- avoid plagiarism
Written assignments without proper referencing will_
lose significant marks and possibly be graded as a fail
Proper citation and referencing is essential to avoid
plagiarism
According to the SSNT “Academic Writing Guide”, plagiarism is the:
“representation of another person’s work as your own without correct acknowledgement of the source”.
Proper referencing requires (2)-
1. Use of in-text referencing (also referred to as citation)
Three options
-3-
- Author and date placed within parenthesis
- Date only placed in parenthesis
- Author and date both integrated into sentence
Proper referencing requires (2)-
- A reference list at the end of each assignment listing_
all the papers cited in your assignment
In-text referencing or citation is a way for you to show_
where the idea or concept you are expressing came from
A citation is not just used to show where ‘words’ came from, but also shows where the
ideas you are discussing came from
Important- you must only reference the source you are discussing, not
your own thoughts/critique
Also important- No need to reference where the point discussed is _
commonly known (ie forms part of the common general knowledge)
