A term developed in the twentieth century to describe the operation or planning of economic and foreign policy on a global basis
GLOBALISM
A large country house that stood at the heart of an agricultural estate and centered around the pursuit of entertainment and leisure; predominate during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, but based on the ancient Roman typology
VILLA
Style introduced in the 18th century to describe a style of art and architecture that originated in Italy around 1520 and spread throughout Europe, chiefly described as breaking the rules of classicism and characterized by the use of visual trickery and/or exaggerated forms; also known as the High Renaissance
MANNERISM
A central public square in the Netherlands that functions as a market and place of public debate. It is also where major civic architecture (specifically a town hall) is situated
MARKET SQUARE
A projecting part of a fortification at an angle to the line of a wall, so as to allow defensive fire in several directions
BASTION
Elevated, dome-shaped pavilions used to mark the corners and roof to the entrances of significant structures in Indian architecture (particularly Mughal architecture); translates to canopy or umbrella
CHHATRI
An inn with a central courtyard for travelers or merchants; short for caravanserais (caravan or a group of people traveling together)
SERAI
A rectangular hall or space in Islamic architecture that is usually vaulted and walled on three sides with one end entirely open; translates to apadana
IWAN
A low, wide type arch with a pointed apex found in Persian and Mughal architecture
FOUR-CENTERED ARCH
An Islamic quadrilateral garden layout based on the four gardens of Paradise mentioned in the Qur’an (honey, wine, water, and milk). The quadrilateral garden is divided by walkways or flowing water into four smaller parts.
CHAHAR BAGH
The control of one people by a culturally different one, which results in an unequal relationship that exploits differences of economic, political, and ideological development between the two
COLONIALISM
A public square in an urban context that is usually surrounded by administrative and religious structures, especially in Spanish speaking countries
