The topmost chamber of a Japanese pagoda; believed to house the Buddha’s remains

The innermost sanctum of a Hindu temple where the temple’s icon or idol resides; literally “womb chamber”

In Hindu temples, a pillared porch or hall connected to a sanctum by a vestibule
MANDAPA
A three-dimensional model of the Hindu cosmos which makes the vertical axis in the form of a cosmic mountain; houses the garbha-griha
SIKHARA
A geometric figure representing the cosmos or universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism; literally “circle”
MANDALA
An entrance porch forming a transitional area between the outside and a mandapa of the temple
ARDHA MANDAPA
The destruction of images or icons for religious or political reasons
