Wk 6: Lumbar Ligaments Flashcards
Anterior longitudinal
Location: Anterior to vertebral bodies, spans from anterior arch of C1-sacrum/coccyx, thicker in lumbar region
Function: connects vertebral bodies, limits extension
Posterior longitudinal
Location: Posterior surface of vertebral bodies, spans from posterior arch of C1-sacrum, thicker in thoracic region
Function: connects vertebral bodies, limits flexion
Ligamentum Flava
Location: on each side of laminae, from part of posterior surface of vertebral canal
Function: maintains upright posture and assists vertebral column in resuming posture after flexion
Supraspinous ligament
Location: continuous on spinous processes from C7-coccyx
Function: connects tips of adjacent spinous processes
Intertransverse ligaments
Location: connects transverse processes from C1-S1
Function: connect adjacent transverse processes of vertebrae, provide accessory support to intervertebral joints
Iliolumbar and Iliosacal Ligaments
Consists of: 2 bands that extend from tip and border of L5 transverse processes
Function: Stabilize L5. resist flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral bending
