Wk. 5 - Sharing Results Flashcards
descriptive uncertainty
Statistical uncertainty arising from variation in observations around any measure of central tendency (or other expected value) and for which the researcher proposes no explanation. It is uncertainty knowing or predicting individual scores on the basis of a measure of central tendency. This uncertainty is quantified by dispersion measures (e.g., standard deviation, variation, range).
external uncertainty
A form of methodological uncertainty relating to researchers’ ability to generalize their findings appropriately sampling and theory development.
inferential uncertainty
Statistical uncertainty relating to the possibility that an observed result is due to random error or chance. This uncertainty is estimated by a probability value, where a low probability indicates low uncertainty.
methodological uncertainty
Doubt about the applicability of research findings arising from features of the research procedure. Generally speaking, this uncertainty is difficult to quantify but it can be minimized by appropriate research practice.
statistical uncertainty
Doubt about statistics arising from the presence of random error. Generally speaking, such uncertainty is easier to estimate than to reduce.
