Soft Tissue Massage Absolute Contraindications
Tissue inflammation/malignancy, circulatory disorders, abnormal sensations, skin disorders, early bruising, recent/unhealed scars or open wounds, adjacent to recent fx site, acute inflammation/tubercular infection of joint & tissue, suspected DVT, burns, advances osteoporosis
Relative Contraindications to STM
Older people, skin fragility, early stage of osteoporosis, children, adults w/ learning or physical disabilities, ppl recovering from infections & bone fx
Soft Tissue Mob Types
Effleurage: to relax and increase lymphatic drainage
Stroking: to decrease muscle tone and fluid movement
Petrissage: to release area of muscle fibrosis and “milk” muscle of waste product due to trauma/inactivity, or increase muscle mobility, and decrease muscle tension
Strumming: to increase motion and flexibility of muscle, decrease tone/tension of muscle
Cross friction massage: to increase mobility and extensibility of musculoskeletal tissues; prevent and treat inflammatory scar tissue
