Q

Describe the pathogenesis of rotavirus.

A
  1. RV infect apical cells of small intestinal villi causing cell death and desquamation
  2. Necrosis of apical villi reduces digestion, causing diarrhoea through primary malabsorption (leads to villous atrophy
  3. Villous atrophy compensated by reactive crypt cell hyperplasia giving increased secretin leading to diarrhoea

Q

Why was the 1st rotavirus vaccine suspended?

A

Due to infants developing intussusception (a serious condition in which part of the intestine slides into an adjacent part of the intestine. This telescoping action often blocks food or fluid from passing through. Intussusception also cuts off the blood supply to the part of the intestine that’s affected)
