WK 2 - MEASURE DIETARY INTAKE & BODY COMP. IN ATHLETES Flashcards
Dietary assesment methods?
RETROSPECTIVE: 24hr recall Diet history Food frequency questionaire Computer assited techniques
PROSPECTIVE: Food records / diaries Duplicate portion analysis Observation Balance sheets/store inventory Electronic records Photographic or video-record
Anthropometry?
Measurement of body size, weight and proportions.
Can be used to monitor/assess: health development & growth nutritional status body composition
Anthropometric imaging methods:
Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA)*
Ultrasound
Computed tomography (CT)
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
anthropometric non-imaging methods:
Surface anthropometry* Air dysplacement plesthmyography Three-dimensional body scanning Bioelectrical impedance (BIA)* Weight, height and BMI
Most common anthropometric methods used in athletes?
DXA
Surface anthropometry
BIA
DXA Scan?
Full body scan. Patients lie flat on a bed while scanning arm scans the entire body.
Generates detailed images of:
bones
lean body mass
body fat of participants
BIA?
Determines the electrical impedance, or opposition to the flow of an electric current through body tissues which is then used to calculate total body water which can then be used to estimate fat free mass.
