Wk 2 Flashcards
What is a Somatic intervention
Brain substrates are manipulated in a controlled manner, recording its affects on behaviour
Examples of somatic behaviour
Administer a hormone -> Strength of mating behaviour
Stimulate brain region electrically -> Movement toward goal object
Cut connections between parts of nervous system -> Recognition of stimulus
What is behavioural intervention
Altering behaviour in a controlled manner and recording the results
What is an example of a behavioural intervention
Put male in presence of female -> Changes in hormone levels
Present a visual stimulus -> Changes in electrical activity of the brain
Give training -> Anatomical changes in nerve cells
What is a correlational approach to behavioural neuroscience
Behaviour affects neural events and neural events affect behaviour
What is an example of a correlational approach to neuroscience
Brain size <—> Learning scores
Hormone levels <—> Strength of mating behaviour
Enlarged cerebral ventricles <—-> Schizophrenic symptoms
What does a positron emission spectroscopy do
Visualises cerebral blood flow
What does a Functional MRI (FMRI) do
Measures regions of the brain with an increased O2 usage
What does a Diffusion Tensor Imaging machine do
Diffusion of water molecules as an indicator of white matter structure. Can show the connectivity of different brain regions during a particular behaviour
What does an Electroencephalography (EEG/ERP) do
Measures electrical brain activity through measuring voltage differences through different scalp areas that results from underlying brain activity. Data is shown as brain waves
