What is the difference
Public Health
International Health
Global Health
“Public” Health – origins in the first decades of the 1900s
“International” Health – origins emerged as the study of health outside of one’s own country (by increase income countries preferably)
“Global Health” – now viewed by the majority of Global Health organizations, academia and practitioners as the preferred term.
Why the switch from International health to global health
The preference for the term “global health” where international health might previously have been used runs parallel to a shift in philosophy and attitude that emphasizes the mutuality of real partnership, a pooling of experience and knowledge and a two way flow between developed and developing countries
Global health uses a less paternalistic and elitist lens
Major objective of Global Health
Health Equity with a strong emphasis on diminishing health inequities and health disparities among all peoples/nations of the world
“Highly interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary within and beyond health sciences” (p. 1994)
Global Health solutions require global cooperation
Another way of simply addressing the concept of Global health was stated by Skolnik (2012): “Global health implies a global perspective on public health problems
Koplan Definition of Global health
an area of study, research and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. Global health emphasizes transnational health issues within and beyond health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-level clinician care.
Wenili Definition of Global Health **
Within the normative framework of human rights, global health is a system-based, ecological (SDoH) and transdisciplinary approach to research, education, and practice which seeks to provide innovative (doing things haven’t been done), integrated, and sustainable solutions to address complex health problems across national boundaries and improve health for all.”
