Wk 1 Flashcards
Introduction to Cells
1
Q
What is a Prokaryotic cell?
A
- A simple internal organisation
- Single enclosed compartment surrounded by plasma membrane
2
Q
What is a Eukaryotic cell?
A
- Complex internal organisation
- Defined membrane bound nucleus
- Internal membrane that enclose other compartments (organelles)
3
Q
What is gram positive bacteria?
A
- Have cell walls made from a thick layer of peptidoglycan
- Retain crystal violet dye; darker colour (purple)
- Generally easier to kill, absorb antibiotics and chemicals more easily
4
Q
What is gram negative bacteria?
A
- Have cell walls made from a thin layer of peptidoglycan
- Do not retain crystal violet dye; lighter colour (pink)
- Located beneath an outer lipid membrane
5
Q
What is a virus?
A
Unable to reproduce or carry out functions on their own; must hijack the metabolic machinery of their host.
6
Q
What is a fungi?
A
- Can be single or multi-cellular
- They can infect humans (Mycosis) and cause diseases
- Usually affecting skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes (epithelial tissues) (mouth, throat, lungs etc
7
Q
What are protists?
A
- Single cell
- No cell wall (have protein film)
- Uni or multicellular
8
Q
Why is staining used?
A
To highlight important features of the tissue as well as to enhance the tissue contrast.
9
Q
What are artifacts?
A
Things on the slide that should not be there.
