WiWithin-neuron Communication Flashcards
What causes a nerve impulse to a trigger a neuron?
a stimulus caused by a neural input triggers a nerve impulse in an axon
What is the resting potential?
when a neuron is electrically charged before receiving any input
What are charged atoms called?
ions
What are the main ions that create a resting potential?
sodium and potassium
Why is there an uneven distribution of charged atoms inside and outside of the neuron?
selective permeability
What is hyperpolarization?
when a polarized state goes in the negative side
What is depolarization?
when a polarized state goes in the positive side
What forces push out Na+ and K+ out of the neuron?
electrochemical forces
What is depolarization in the dendrites or cell body called?
EPSPs and IPSPs
What is the all or none law?
when the action potential is produced fully or not at all
What is an action potential propagation?
when an action potential travels to the end of the axon with no degradation
How does the speed production of an action potential increase?
by myelination of the axons
Where are action potentials produced?
the small patches between myelin sheaths that jump down to axons
What are the unmyelinated patches called?
nodes of Ranvier
