What is ADVOKATE?

A

A - amount of time under observation
D - distance of how far away they were
V - visibility (lighting, weather)
O - obstructions (cars, walls, people)
K - known - are they previously known
A - any reason to remember - distinguishing features (scars, tattoos)
T - time lapse - did they leave your sight?
E - error or omissions - consider not all accounts may be accurate

OH LAW TIPS - used when writing a victim witness statement after WHAT & WHO

A

• Offence – witness knowledge of offence
• History – knowledge of scene, victim or suspect
• Location – Present at or knowledge of a scene
• Actions – action of person present
• Wounds – their explanation of wounds
• Times – time in their words (clarify AM/PM)
• Identification – Their knowledge of person – description - ADVOKATE
• Possessions – things used or at the scene
• Speech – what was said during the offence and reaction to it
