First 7 subtests: Block design, similarities, matrix reasoning, digit span, coding, vocabulary, and figure weights.
One substitution is permitted when deriving the full-scale IQ
Documentation Codes
Q-query a response
P-prompt for additional response
R-Repeat directions
Block Design*
Measures nonverbal reasoning and visual-spatial organization.
Timed
Dimension error (BDde) - recorded any time they reach 3 or 4 dimensions for a 2 or 3 dimension design. Recorded with D
Score the number of blocks correct, even if overall design is wrong (BDp)
BDn - eliminates bonuses for time
BDre - gives credit for rotated designs (30 degrees)
Discontinue: 2
Basal: 2 consecutive
Just 1 block is half and half (4) - 2 for 9 - at least one red and one white
Prompt for delayed response after 30 second
Scramble blocks after every administration
Incorrect if rotated more than 30 degrees - correct once
Similarities*
Similarities measures verbal concept formation.
Child is asked to say how the objects are similar
0 = no similarity
1 = specific property or function in common
2 = general classification of both objects
Basal: 2 consecutive
Discontinue: 3 consecutive
Score the best response if given multiple - exception is if it is spoiled
Unclear response -> tell me more about it or explain what you mean
If they give a word with the same letter -> tell me another way XXX and XXX are alike
1 query for vague answers, multiple queries for indicated answers in book
Matrix Reasoning*
Matrix reasoning measures visual-perceptual analogic reasoning
Looks at an incomplete matrix and chooses the missing portion
Basal: 2 consecutive
Discontinue 3 consecutive
After 30 seconds -> do you have an answer, but no time limit
Digit Span*
Digit span measures auditory shor-term memory and auditory sequential processing.
Digit forward, Digit backward, Digits sequencing
Everyone starts at 1, so no basal
Discontinue when 0 on both trials
Read at 1 number/second, point to them when done and drop inflection
No repeating
record what child says
Coding*
Coding measures the ability to learn an unfamiliar task involving speed of mental operation, graphomotor speed, and visual-perceptual symbol associative skills.
Copy symbols that are paired with other symbols
Different version of instructions and procedures depending on the age
120 seconds (2 minutes)
Eraseless pencils
Rotation of more than 90 degrees is incorrect
CDre = rotation errors
Prompt to go onto the next line if they stop
Must do everything in order
Extra sheet for left-handed
Vocabulary*
measures knowledge of words
Basal 2 consecutive
Discontinue after 3 failures
2 point response - good synonym, a major use, one or more distinctive features, or general classification
1 point - loose synonym, minor use, an attribute that is not a distinguishing feature, a concrete instance of a word
0 point - obviously wrong answers vague or answers with a poverty of content, slang
Query responses indicated in the book
Provide corrective feedback for less than perfect score on cross items
Can repeat if it’s misheard
Figure Weights*
measures visual-perceptual quantitative reasoning.
Pictures of scales and you need to figure out weights
Time limit depends on question
Basal: 2 consecutive
Discontinue: 3 consecutive
Visual Puzzles-
Visual puzzles measures spatial visual-perceptual reasoning. Putting together a picture from pieces Record time, 30 second limit Basal - 2 consecutive Discontinue - 3 consecutive
Picture Span-
measures short-term memory and visual working memory.
Remembering the order of pictures.
Basal: 2 consecutive
discontinue: 3 consecutive
2 correct sequence, 1 correct pictures wrong sequence, 0 not selecting all pictures
LPSs = longest picture span stimuli that they got correct
LPSr = longest picture span response that they got correct
Symbol Search-
measures processing speed
look at symbols and then decides whether they appear in an array of symbols
120 seconds - 2 minutes
prompt going to the next page
