Wire Rope Flashcards
Frictional wear on a rope
Abrasion
Heated to reduce stress, increase strength
Annealed
A term used to describe a condition of a wire rope, where it is forced to compression, and the outer strands are forced away from the core, forming a cage
Birdcaging
The axial part of a wire rope, on which the strands are laid
Core
The chemical breakdown of the materials in a wire rope through an adverse reaction to acids, bases, or moisture
Corrosion
The excess wire rope exposed after some type of end termination has been properly fitted. The part of the wire rope that is not exposed to the strain, applied by any type of load, such as a load block, ball or rigging gear.
Dead end
The ratio of the nominal strength to the total working load for a wire rope
Design factor
A cylindrical barrel on which a rope is wound for either storage or operation
Drum
The ratio of a wire rope’s actual, breaking strength to the aggregate strength of all individual wires, tested separately; this is usually expressed as a percentage
Efficiency
The process of progressive fracture resulting from the bending of individual wires. These fractures may occur at bending stresses well below the ultimate strength of the material. Lack of lubrication and rust on a wire rope can accelerate this process.
Fatigue
A cord or a rope of synthetic fiber used as a center of a wire rope
FiberCore (FC)
Small wires within a strand used as spacers that help hold the position and support other wires
Filler wire
A wire rope or strand classification by any number of factors, such as type of material and strength
Grade
Ball used in conjunction with the hoisting hook
Headache ball
Wire rope used as the core of a larger rope
Independent wire rope core (IWRC)
All strand wire, except the outer or cover wires
Inner wires
Deformation of a wire rope caused by loop of rope being pulled tight. This causes irreparable damage to the rope.
Kink
The distance measured parallel to the axis of the rope or strand in which a strand or wire makes one revolution around the core or center
Lay (length)
The manner that the wires in a strand of wire rope are laid in the form of a spiral
Lay (Strand)
The part of the wire that is exposed to all weight applied to the wire rope
Live section
A wire rope sheave enclosed inside plates with a lifting attachment (hook or shackle)
Load block
A 360° change of direction of a wire rope that results in a kink when pulled tight
Loop
A trademark alloy made of copper and nickel
Monel
The ultimate load at which a wire rope will fail
Nominal breaking strength
A grade of steel used in the manufacture of wire rope
Plow steel (PS)
Wires that are permanently formed doing fabrication into the helical shape they will be in when placed in a strand.
Preformed
Rope system in which the rope travels around drums and sheaves to change direction or increase mechanical advantage
