Cinematography - Shot reverse shot to create a closer conversation
Performance - Soldier is calm and seems sincere whereas Ree is more desperate, the actor was a real life army recruiter.
Ideology - Ree is already a soldier in the Ozarks, she didn’t give up after all her physical and mental anguish
Sheriff and Teardrop Standoff Scene
Mise En Scene - Dark lighting is forboding, the police lights appear ominously behind them telling the audience something will happen
Sound - Music is tense
Cinematography - Shots from Sheriff’s POV showing how threatening Teardrop is especially when he pulls a weapon
Ideology - The Sheriff is shown to have no authority over Teardrop showing how lawless the Ozarks are, there is easy access to guns
Overall Cinematography
Cinematograher - Micheal McDonough
95% is filmed on handheld cameras makes the scenes immersive
The camera is very rarely static
Overall Mise En Scene
All filmed in the Ozarks, the landscape dominate
The cold winter mixed with the bleakness of the disintegrating landscapes creates a hopeless feeling
A cool colour palette generally but is contrasted by more domestic or civilised scenes
Real found locations like the burned meth house
Femenism
“A fememist film about an anti fememist world”
Ree doesn’t conform to the standard sexist beliefs of the Ozarks and encourages her friend Gail to do the same when she stands up to her husband and gets the keys to the truck.
Opening - Sound
Sound - Folksong music sets the scene and introduces the sense of community in the Ozarks. Ree appears on screen for the first time when the word “momma” is used in the song.
Opening - Mise En Scene
Mise En Scene - Brighter lighting when Ree takes the children to school, shows their optimistic future. The outside areas have blue/grey lighting.
The house is cluttered and disorganised, the children appear to sleep on the sofa which shows the hardships of the life.
Opening Scene - Cinematography
Cinematography - Opens with a wide shot of the rundown, poor environment which likely contrasts the audience’s own living conditions. Immediately shows the contrast and different way of life.
The children are filmed through bars at one point which represents how they are trapped in the Ozarks
