Opening Scene - Meaning
Sets up the theme of childhood with the school setting as well as Mason being outside looking at the clouds. Mason and Mum walking together shows they have a good relationship. This scene also shows that Mason is the main character
Day out with Dad scene
Cinematography - Mid Shot in the car showing everyone equally, establishing shots of the city.
Sound - Lack of non diagetic in car to make the scene more realistic
Editing - Montage editing happy moments
Mise En Scene - Dad’s car is ‘cool’ and not a family car
Day out with Dad - Meaning and response
Spectators are supposed to like Dad, he takes them out and cares for them. The shot types are equal showing the respect they have for him. Comparisons to Bill as a bad father. Playing catch associates with the ideologies surrounding being a dad.
The Moment Captures Us - End Scene
Cinematography - Extreme Long Shot, High Camera Angles. Naturalistic lighting.
Editing - Cuts between Mason and the road, seeing what he sees.
Mise En Scene - Desert location. Mason is alone. Truck is second hand. Masons appearance at the end compares to at the start, beard and smarter clothes.
The Moment Captures Us - Meaning and response
The shots represent how much Mason is leaving behind and how much he has ahead. The amount of people moving to college represents how many people go through Boyhood. The audience feels that they have grown up with Mason and spent 12 years with him.
