Who was st Patrick
St Patrick was the most famous bishop to come to Ireland
He was brought to Ireland as a slave when he was 16. He escaped to Britain after 6 years but came back to Ireland to spread Christianity.
He wrote a book called “st. Patrick’s Confessio”
Who were monks
Monks where men who gave their lives to Christ and chose to live apart from society in closed religious communities called monasteries
A day in the life of a monk
• Monks led strict, simple lives.
• They spent their days praying, working, and eating.
• They prayed six to eight times per day.
• Monks were often self- sufficient
• Irish monasteries became famous for teaching poetry, literacy and art

Glendalough
Beehive huts
Early Christian monks in Ireland lived in beehive huts.
These were stone huts shaped like beehives hence the name.
They where built using a corbeling style
Monks would do very little in here except sleep
Oratory
Monks attended church and had small masses in a small church called an oratory

The scriptorium is where manuscripts where copied and hand illustrated

This is where monks would eat
Round towers
This was a bell tower and a safe place for people and treasures.
• A round tower’s door was many metres off the ground and could not be reached without a ladder.
• All its windows were very high up.
• This meant those inside could see for miles, but also meant attackers could not get in easil
