Winter Flashcards
“The year goes”
The year is over. Everything is dying so it can start again in the new year. Not looking forward to the new year.
“Many a summer dies.”
Summer is over and the bad part of the year is coming.
“Bingham’s pond”
Bingham’s pond is in the West End, the sun sets in the West.

“Goes”
Goes is emphasised, everything goes.
“Gulls that stand around surprised”
They are surprised about the ice.
“Heavy Light”
Oxymoron. Adds emphasis to the harsh white light that winter brings. Creates an idea of discomfort.
“It goes, and ice appears”
Good things go and bad things appear.
“Swan-tracks gone”
Swans migrate to warmer places.
“After many a summer dyes”
Winter turns the world another colour as summer dies.
“Fog / drives monstrous down the dual carraigeway / out to the west”
Drives monstrous = personification, creates an image of the fog being forceful and ferocious.
The dual carraigeway symbolises things leaving and others coming.
Out to the West = Sun sets in the west, summer is gone.
“Even in my room”
Winter is effecting everywhere, not just outside.
“Decay”
Connotations of ageing and dying.

Even in dark times the memory of summer remains.
“Crystal beyond white”
Absence of colour = drained of life.
