Generally speaking a PDO is smaller with more tightly refined regulations.

A

• PGI = IGP (Indication géographique protégée) or Vin de Pays

What is the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter?

A

• VDP is a producers association that’s has its own vineyards and wine classification. Generally has the best vineyards in Germany. Strict regulations. High quality wines. Eagle on the cap of bottle.

Dry wines from VDP.Grosse Lage (the best site) are called VDP.Grosses Gewächs and are identified by GG and a bunch of grapes on the neck of the bottle.

What’s the highest labelling term in Austria?

A

• PDO = Qualitätswein
• PGI = Landwein

• DAC = Districtus Austrie Controllatus - a specific region with a defined wine style.

Notes -
• Prädikat labelling exist in the same way like Germany but here the wines are medium sweet to sweet.

• Strohwein or Schilwein refers to when bunches of grapes have been laid out on beds of straw during winter to concentrate sugars.

The traditional terms are more often used:
• DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata)
• DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) - stricter regulations.

• PGI = IGP (Indicazione Geographica Protetta)
The traditional term is more commonly used:
• IGT (Indocazione Geographica Tipica)

Other terms:
• Classico - the historical center.
• Riserva - stricter laws, higher alcohol, longer ageing.
