Which organization controls the international GI system?
• World Trade Organization
Give en example of a GI for Chardonnay & Sweet fortified wine that was used in Australia but is now banned?
• Chablis
• Sherry terms like Fino & Amontillado
If a GI is stated on the label, how many percent of liquid must come from that region?
• Minimum 85%
Note - this is not universal. Some require lower percentage and some require higher. For example a PDO requires 100%.
What is the difference between a PGI and a PDO and what do they stand for?
• PDO - Protected Designation of Origin
• PGI - Protected Geographical Indicator
Generally speaking a PDO is smaller with more tightly refined regulations.
What are the French terms for PGI and PDO?
• PDO = AC (Appellation d’origine contrôlée)
• PGI = IGP (Indication géographique protégée) or Vin de Pays
Note - AOP can be used interchangeably with AC but as AC is the traditional terms this gets used more often.
What are the German terms for PDO and PGI? What is the labelling term if neither PDO or PGI applies?
• PGI = Landwein
• PDO = Qualitätswein
• Deutscher wein

What is halbtrocken?
• A German term for off-dry to medium sweet wines. Also known as feinherb.
What is the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter?
• VDP is a producers association that’s has its own vineyards and wine classification. Generally has the best vineyards in Germany. Strict regulations. High quality wines. Eagle on the cap of bottle.
Dry wines from VDP.Grosse Lage (the best site) are called VDP.Grosses Gewächs and are identified by GG and a bunch of grapes on the neck of the bottle.
What are PDO and PGI called in Austria?
What’s the highest labelling term in Austria?
• PDO = Qualitätswein
• PGI = Landwein
• DAC = Districtus Austrie Controllatus - a specific region with a defined wine style.
Notes -
• Prädikat labelling exist in the same way like Germany but here the wines are medium sweet to sweet.
• Strohwein or Schilwein refers to when bunches of grapes have been laid out on beds of straw during winter to concentrate sugars.

• Domestically they use POP (Prostatevomeni Onomasia Proelefsis)
• Note there is a labelling term called Appellation d’origine de qualité supérieure which is a subcategory within PDO.

• Classico - the historical center.
• Riserva - stricter laws, higher alcohol, longer ageing.

• PDO = DOP (Denominação de Origem Protegida) or traditional DOC (Denominação de Origem Controlada)
• PGI = IGP (Indicação Geográfica Protegida) or traditional Vinho Regional
Note - wine can be label Vinho if no geographical indication applies.

• AVA - American Viticultural Area.
Can be a small as a vineyard or as large as a state. Percentages required can be different in different states.

• VQA - Vinterns Quality Alliance.
Every VQA must use 100% of grapes grown in the region same as European PDO’s. Must be Vitis Vinifera or a Hybrid.
