Winds Flashcards
How do objects curve due to the corealis effect?
The rotation of the Earth causes an interesting phenomenon on free moving objects on the Earth. Objects in the Northern Hemisphere are deflected to the right, while objects in the Southern Hemisphere are deflected to the left. The Coriolis effect, thus tries to force winds to shift towards the right or left.
Locations of major global winds are:
1) Polar Easterlies: From 60-90 degrees latitude. 2) Prevailing Westerlies: From 30-60 degrees latitude (aka Westerlies). 3)Tropical Easterlies: From 0-30 degrees latitude (aka Trade Winds).
What causes wind?
Wind is caused by differences in the atmospheric pressure. When a difference in atmospheric pressure exists, air moves from the higher to the lower pressure area, resulting in winds of various speeds.
