Heat Transfer Flashcards
How does convection work (temp and density)?
Cooler air is denser than warmer air. Cooler and denser air displaces warmer and less dense air nearer the surface of the earth. Warmer, less dense air, rises and cools in the atmosphere, becoming less dense as it cools higher in the atmosphere.
Why is the troposphere warm?
The uneven heating of the regions of the troposphere by the sun ( the sun warms the air at the equator more than the air at the poles )causes convection currents, large-scale patterns of winds that move heat and moisture around the globe.
Main types of (electromagnetic radiation) EMR that come from the sun?
visible light, ultraviolet rays, and infrared rays (also known as heat)
Where does the most evaporation occur?
The ocean.
What is insolation?
Direct or diffused shortwave solar radiation that is received in the Earth’s atmosphere or at its surface. The more solar radiation received in an area the greater the evaporation that will occur. (related to where the most evaporation occurs.
