Wind Patterns Flashcards
Sea breeze
a breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day owing to the relative warmth of the land.
Land breeze
a breeze blowing toward the sea from the land, especially at night, owing to the relative warmth of the sea.
Convection currents
a current in a fluid that results from convection.
Coriolis effect
an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation. On the earth, the effect tends to deflect moving objects to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern and is important in the formation of cyclonic weather systems.
Jet stream
a narrow, variable band of very strong, predominantly westerly air currents encircling the globe several miles above the earth. There are typically two or three jet streams in each of the northern and southern hemispheres.
Trade winds
Also called trades. any of the nearly constant easterly winds that dominate most of the tropics and subtropics throughout the world, blowing mainly from the northeast in the Northern Hemisphere, and from the southeast in the Southern Hemisphere.
Doldrums
A spot near the equator were there are very few winds
Prevailing winds
Winds that blow away from the equator bring warmer ait to the poles
Prevailing westerlies
Wind that blow away from the equator blow west to east found over the US
Polar easterlies
Winds that are.found near the poles wind that moves eat to west
El Nino
Band of warm ocean tempatures that develop off the coast of South America
El Nina
Band ofband called ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America can call for precipitation cool down climate
Gulf stream
Ocean current found in the way that brings warmer temperatures to the east coast of the US
