Wind Patterns Flashcards
Convection Currents
Gas and liquids rise and sink in a circular patterns
Land Breeze
When the sun sets, the land cools off faster than the sea. The warm air above the sea rises. Cooler air from the land moves toward the sea to replace it. This causes a land breeze
Sea Breeze
When days are sunny, the land heats up faster than the sea. The warm air above the land rises. Follower air from over the sea move to replace it
Coriolanus Effect
The rotation of the earth causes objects in the northern hemisphere to deflect right and the objects in the Southern Hemisphere to deflect left
Jet Stream
Stream of wind that blows about 200mph and is about 10km off the ground. Affects weather dramatically.
Trade Winds
Winds that blow toward the equator
Doldrums
Place near the equator that doesn’t receive lots of wind
Prevailing Winds
Winds that blow away from the equator. Brings warm air to the poles
Prevailing westerlies
Winds that blow away from the equator. They blow west to east
Polar easterlies
Winds that are found around the poles. They blow east to west
La Niña
Band of cold ocean water that develops off the coast of South America. Bring precipitation. In Pacific Ocean. Cool off climate
El Niño
Band of warm ocean water that develops off the coast of South America. Brings drought and warms climate. In Pacific Ocean
Gulf Stream
Ocean current found in Atlantic that brings warmer temperatures to our east coast
