Wind erosion Flashcards
What is erosion?
Erosion takes place when materials in the landscape are moved from one location to another.
This might happen as dust is
blown off the side of a cliff face by wind, or carried downstream by a river.
name the tree types of erosion
Wind erosion
Water erosion
Ice erosion
explain how weathering and erosion work together
Once rocks have been broken down by weathering,
the final state of all materials is to be carried
away to another location by erosion.
what is abrasion
when sand or rock carried by wind (or water)
wear away rock
like sand paper on wood
name the three forms of wind erosion
saltation
creep
suspension
compare the three forms of wind erosion
C – involves movement of heavy soil particles
SAL— involves movement of fine soil particles
SUS — involves movement of very small dirt and dust particles
C – short distance
SAL -long distance
SUS – very long distances
C – particles move mostly on surface of soil rather then air
SAL — particles can be lifted to air by wind or particle collision
SUS –readily lifts particles to the air
what are Yardangs
when rock is eroded in aletrnating ridges
what did ancient Egyptians do with yardangs
they sculpted the into animal and human forms
what is a mushroom rock
when wind carring rock and sand abrade the bottom of a boulder rock , eroding the bottom of the rock , causing it to be smaller and thinner that the top of the rock
