water erosion Flashcards
list the thing that water erosion creates
waterfalls natural levees meandering streams 0X- BOW LAKE Braided stream river deltas
lagoons
caves , arches , stacks
cliffs
what is a levee
A levee is a natural or artificial wall
that blocks water from going where
we don’t want it to go.
how is a levee formed
when a river flodts and deposits sand / sediment on the side if river bank
The banks of a river are often slightly elevated from the river bed.
what is a meander
A meander is a bend in a river channel.
how is a meander formed
Meanders form when water in the
river erodes the banks on the outside of the channel.
what is the difference between deposition and erosion
erosion involves the movement of sand and soil particles from one location to another
deposition is when those sand and soil particles moved by erosion , is deposited in places on land
what is a ox bow lake
a curved lake formed, when it had been cut off from the the meandering stream, by erosion
how is a ox bow ale formed
erosion makes the neck narrow
during floods the river take the shortest coarse through the meander neck
this cuts off the meander from the main stream and it forms a ox bow lake
what is a braided stream
A river with multiple channels separated y sand or gavel bars or (islands )
how is a braided stream formed
braiding form by deposition of sand or gravel bars in mid-channel
what is a delta
forms at the mouth of a river where it opens into the ocean
how are deltas formed
forms from deposition of sediment carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth
put into the correct from
stack , cave , arches
caves , arches , stacks
explain the formation of caves , arches and stacks, stumps
- large crack , opened up by hydraulic action
- the crack group into a cave, by hydraulic action and abrasion
- cave becomes bigger
- the cave breaks through the headland forming a natural arch
- the arch is eroded and collapses
- this leaves a tall stack
