Wind Currents/air masses/ ocean currents/ waether Flashcards
Warm air….
Rises
Cold air…….
Falls
Global wond pattern
North pole
Equator
North pole - falls
Equator - rises
Low / high pressure
Equator
30°s
30°n
Equator - low pressure
30°s - high pressure
30°n - high pressure
The coriolis effect
Northern hemisphere
Southern hemisphere
North - deflected right ( as of walking down from yhe north
Southern - deflected left
Wind is …
Moving air, the faster the air moves the more wind
Winds named …..
After the direction they come from
Prevailing winds….
Wind that is most common in a certain area
Ocean currents
Giant rivers that flow through the oceans
3 causes for ocean belts
1) unequal heating : @ equater where there us direact sunlight the water expands about 10mm, the water the flowsa downhill causing a current
2) the earth rotating: because yhe earth spins, currents are deflected to the right
3) prevailing winds : friction between global winds and surface of earth ( some currents follow global wind patterns)
Air masses
Large bodies of air with the same temperature, pressure + moisture
Maritime air masses
Brings rain ( comes from oceans) Summer - cold/mild Winter - warm/mild
Continental air masses
Dry ( comes from continents)
Summer- warm
Winter- cold
Polar air masses
Cold ( comes from north pole)
Summer- cold/wet
Winter- cold/wet
Tropical
Warm ( from equator)
Summer- warm/dry
Winter- warm/dry
