Anti-Cyclone, depression, Rain, Cloud +water Cycle Flashcards
Anti-cyclone -weather associated
Clear cloudless skies, light wind and percipation is unlikely.
Summer : its hot and sunny
Winter : low temperatures and frosty nights
- in the norhtern hemisphere winds blow clockwise
Anti-cyclone
An air mass with no fronts
Winds blow clockwise
It creates high pressure at the centre as it consist of cold air descending on the earths surface.
Winds blow away from center
Relief rain
Does ireland recive relief rain
When an air mass is forced over a mountain range.
Air cools and condenses
Clouds form, the rain falls on the widnward side.
The air left descends on the sheltered sidehas little moisture, condension stops and a rain shadow is formed.
Ireland recieves relief rainfall throughout the year
Cyclonic rainfall ( frontal rainfall)
Does ireland recieve frontal rainfall.
When a cold ( polar air) and a warm ( moist tropical) air mass meets at a frontal.
The warm air is lighter so it rises over the cold heavy air.
Warm air then c.c. (cools condenses)
This forms clouds
Eventuall rain falls, it starts light.
Fronts develope over the atlantic ans bring changabke weather to ireland.
Convectional rainfall
Solar energy heats the earths surface
Moisture is evapoarted from the earth as the land warmsbthe air above it
The warm air rises and cools and condences
Clouds form
Heavy showers follow
Cloud
Stratus
Low alltitude
Appearance
Thick layers
Continuous rain
When its on the ground it is fog
Clounds
Cumunus
Medium alittude
Appearance
Fluffy
Appeares in fair weather
Dark in colour and brings rain
Clounds
Cirrus
High alittude
Appearance
Wispy in appearance
Made of ice crystals
Appears in fair weather
Depression
Symbols
Marked with L for low pressure
Pressure lowest at center
Winds blow anti-clockwise and towards center
Warm front - a line of red semi circles
Cold front - a line of blue triangles
What is a front
The boundary area separating two different air masses
What is an air mass
A large body of air that has similar moisture, temperature, pressure and humidity
4 air mases e.g continental
1) continental :
- winter : cold and dry weather
- summer : hot and dry
2) polar :
- summer / winter : cold and wet weather
3) tropical
- summer / winter : warm and dry
4) maritime
- summer : cold and mild
- winter : warm and mild
How a depressions occurs
- A warm air mass meets a cold air mass
- At the warmest point along the warm air mass, the air will start to rise
- there is an are of low pressure underneath
- At this point in the northern hemisphere the air begins to circulate in a anti - clockwise direction
- where the warm air begins to rise the cold air moves to take its place.
- the cold air travels faster as it descends and it starts to chse the warm front, eventually catching up with it
- cold air lifts all warm air off ground
-
Depression
Weather associated
- cold front
- warm front
- middle
The weather varies at a depression
-cold front : cloudy, temperture decreases, heavy showers + increase in atmospheric pressure
- warm front : cloudy, continous rainfall, wind speed increase, decrease in atmospheric pressure
- middle : some clouds, soem drizzle, increase in temperature
