Wind and Water Processes in Deserts Flashcards
How does a pedestal/mushroom rock form?
Abrasion - wind picks up sand grains and sand blasts lower parts of exposed rock
How does deflation happen?
Wind strips sand from an area leaving pebbles which are too large to be moved.
Surface lowered and deflation hollows can form
What is traction?
Larger particles are rolled or sliding
What is saltation?
Bouncing of smaller particles and wind causes particles to be lifted and carried
What does attrition in the wind cause rocks to look like?
Rounded
What are exogenous rivers?
Source of river is in mountains/humid regions outside desert regions
What is an example of an exogenous river?
River Nile
What are endoreic/endorheic rivers?
Flows into deserts and terminates in deserts (completely isolated away from ocean)
What are ephemeral rivers?
Flash floods that occurs 1x or 2x a year and often associated with flashy hydrographs
