wind and insect pollination Flashcards
define pollination
the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of the stamen to the sigma of the carpel
outline how insect pollination occurs
1) pollinators are attracted by the large, coloured petals and the scent of nectar
2) they use their tongues to reach the nectar at the base of the petal
3) as the pollinator enters the flower the anthers brush against the thorax and legs leaving sticky pollen
4) when the bee enters another flower it brushes the pollen grains against the ripe stigma and cross pollination has taken place
explain how wind pollination occurs
1) anthers hang outside the flower so the wind can blow away small, smooth and light pollen
2) the feathery stigmas hang outside the flower and provide large surface areas for catching pollen grains blown in their path
compare wind and insect pollination
insect- colorful petals, nectar, scent, anthers and stigma inside the flower, sticky and sculpted pollen, large pollen grains
wind- petals absent or small, no scent or nectar, anthers and stigma outside flower, smooth pollen, smaller grains
define cross pollination
pollination between two flowers
