wilting Flashcards
how does wilting occur?
wilting occurs from excessive transpiration, where rate of transpiration is higher than the rate of osmosis. cells are plasmolysed and the leaf folds up and plant becomes limped
what happens if a plant undergoes prolonged wilting?
It may result in death of the plant and the stomata may close under conditions of prolonger water loss to decrease transpiration.
what are the advantages of wilting?
surface area of the leaf exposed to atmospheric air is reduced, reduction in water vapour lost through transpiration, minimising dehydration
what are the disadvantages of wilting?
results in the closire of stomata, reducing the volume of carbon dioxide entering the leaf, decreasing the rate of photosynthesis, the decreased exposure to light also decreases the rate photosynthesis
