Wilson et al 2016 - Impact brain apnoea Flashcards
Summarise Wilson et al 2016
Published in Resuscitation
Literature review and focussed survey of pre-hospital physicians
Investigate the patient who die within 10 minutes of injury - have diffuse swelling but little parenchymal injury
Relationship between energy of brain injury and length of apnoea
IBA - if not treated or spontaneously resolves then hypoxic arrest
Covers:
Historical accounts
- plenty in historical literature to suggest its existence
Post-mortem findings
- death due to head injury but without significant intracranial haemorrhage
- cerebral anaeamia
Radiological findings
- often called DAI
Additional factors
- Alcohol exacerbated apnoea
- Catecholamine surge after TBI well-documented, initial hypertension then cardiovascular collapse due to hypoxia
- Well documented in animal models
Case examples
Prevention
What does table 1 along with figure 2 in Wilson et al 2016 show?
Summary of animal models of impact brain apnoea then a graph of respiration and BP of a dog shot in the head
