Willy Loman Flashcards
Portrayal
Portrayed as a tired old man, run down from his job as a salesman
Slowly we watch as his mental state declines and he falls into a spiral resulting in death
Becomes more irrational and cannot differentiate between past and present throughout the play
Willy’s dependence
Craves attention and its dominated by desire for success
Willy depends on the woman to fulfil his need for approval and to tend his fragile ego
Willy
Willy’s character, emotions, motivations and destiny are developed rough his interactions with others
Willy and the American dream
Major cause of willy’s dissatisfaction in life is his excessive faith in the American dream
“The world’s an oyster, but you can’t crack it open on a mattress”
Metaphor
Willy believes that there are many opportunities out there in the world, which will only come with hard work
“A man is not a piece of fruit”
Metaphor
Willy left feeling useless/unwanted
“Not a breath of fresh air at all in the neighbourhood”
Neighbourhood is a microcosm for the world that has hanged and evolved around willy, whilst willy loman appears to not only have NOT changed but to be completely nostalgic toward the past and state of almost denial as to what these changes mean
