- one of the founders of romanticism
- concerned with human relationship to nature and a fierce advocate of using vocabulary and speech patterns of common people
- associated with the lake district - grew up here

what is a lyrical ballad
A
- lyrical poems express emotion and ballads tell a story, therefore meant to express an emotion and/or tell a story with a supernatural element
- coleridge and wordsworth wanted to establish a more rustic scene within simple form of ballads
- wanted to relate to the common people more so didn’t want their ballads to be like the augustan eras (complex form)

- pushing back against neoclassical poetry of the augustan and romanticism era
- making emphasis on reason rather than emotion
- wanted to relate to the common people, the simple life and poor people
- unusual at the time - most poetry was about ancient heroes or the upper classes
