William Deane Flashcards
Purpose
Tribute to 21 young people who died in the canyon near Interlaken from flash floods. Pay tribute to the deceased, formal memory (14 Australians)
Idea
Individual is inherently connected to their homeland and national identity
establishes the central paradox that someone who dies away can still be at home
Anecdote establishes flower imagery “cast into the Saxetenbach 14 sprigs of wattle”
Nationhood inherently becomes part of your identity
“Bring a little of Australia to them”
Symbolic value of flower
Imagery suggest the coming of new life “it is still winter at home. But the golden wattles are coming into bloom…”
Contributed to the nation
Each individual is valued by and contributed to their nation - emotive and hyperbolic term “profound tragedy” to reference Pathos
Piece of your country
Deane uses an implicit allusion to “The soldier” by Rupert Brooke to suggest that by extension you are a piece of your country
