Wildlife Conservation Flashcards
What does species interdependence involve
Food supplies = eat them. Predators may benefit by removing the sick and weak
Pollination= by animals and wind
Seed dispersal = wind- not that far or animal- further and more reliable
Habitat provision = one species may provide a habitat for another
How do humans threaten wildlife
Deliberate exploitation = food, fashion, furniture, entertainment, traditional medicines
Accidental harm = fishing by-catch , farm harvesting and road kill
Introduced species = predators, competition , disease
Deliberate exploitation of species = removal of predators and avoid competition
What are the conservation method
CITES
Appendix I = NO TRADE
Appendix II = CLOSELY CONTROLLED TRADE
Appendix III= TRADE BETWEEN 2 COUNTRIES
The WILDLIFE AMD COUNTRYSIDE ACT
1981 and 1984
Laws banded that damaging activities and enabled establishment of protected areas
What is sustainable exploitation
Limit amount of exploitation to species by creating laws and enabling long-term resources for species to survive
What is the international whaling commission
Increase whale populations/numbers by only exploiting species in high numbers and not those in low numbers
What does captive breeding mean
The process of breeding rare/endangered species in human controlled environment with restricted settings
What are the problems revolving around captive breeding
If the population is too small it leads to interbreeding
May lose their ability to successfully survive in the wild
Too large to keep in captivity
What are the problems with releasing after being in captive breeding
Lack of food gathering skills
Not immune to local parasites and diseases
Not have the ability to recognise predators
What does habitat conservation involve
Habitat creation
Habitat protection
Habitat management
What is habitat creation
Altering unsustainable habitats so desired species can survive
What is habitat protection
Establishing nature reserves and damage
ESS and NNR
What is habitat management
To maintain and enhance habitat by…..
Controlling succession
Culling or removing undesirable species
Providing suitable conditions
Biological corridors to link habitats
What does rationale include
Education
Medical
Moral and ethical reasons
Economic
Aesthetic and recreational
Food resource
Biological control
