Conditions Needed For Life On Earth Flashcards
Why is water an important component
Liquid only exists on earth as we are just the right distance away from the sun
Is a solvent = transport dissolved substances for metabolic reactions in living organisms
High specific heat capacity causes water to warm up and cool down slowly l, helping moderate the rate and size of temperature change which allows organisms to remain a constant temperature
Ice can float because the ice keeps very cold air above the ice separate from the water below which acts as an insulator
Why is appropriate temperature range important for survival
Suitable temperature range is 6-30 or 0-40
Temperature above 40 denature
Temperature too low affect metabolic reactions as heat is a by product for energy which influence the speed of a reaction so slower reaction
Why is ambient gases important for survival
Consists of oxygen, carbon dioxide and ozone layer
Oxygen =to allows aerobic respiration
Carbon dioxide = to allow photosynthesis and is a major greenhouse component
Ozone layer = absorbs UV radiation and we would be exposed to harmful radiation if it wasn’t there
Why is light and radiation from the sun important
Sun provided energy for photosynthesis
Plants only use red and blue from the electromagnetic spectrum and reflect green
What consisted in the early atmosphere
Mosley carbon dioxide
NO OXYGEN
water, so2, co , s2 , cl2, n2, h2 and also nh3 and ch4
How did life on Earth evolve anaerobically
Oceans formed as the earth cooled and the blight broke down ammonia to nitrogen and hydrogen
Uv light caused water molecule to break up and form oxygen which allowed the evolution of bacteria (Cyanobacteria)
The ozone layer was formed by UV light and stimulated oxygen
What are the 4 conditions needed for life to survive on earth
Water
Appropriate temperature range
ambient gases
Light and radiation from sun
