Wildfires Flashcards
What are wildfires
Uncontrollabel fires that destroy large arae sof vegetation/forests
Three types wildrie:
1 - Ground - prat and tree roots on ground burn - slow , no flame , little smoke
2 - Surafec fire - leaf litter an dlow lying vege burn - high or low intensity
3 - Crown fire - fire moves rapdily through canopy (top laye) - intnsen and fast moving
Conditions that favour wildries?
Vegetation type:
- thikc undergwoth / dense trees - spread
- pine contain lots oil - burn easily
- Eucalpyus trees shed strips bark - spread
Fuel characteristics:
- fine , dry material - brun eaisly
- Continous cover - spread
- more mateirla -burn for longer
Climate and Rexenet weather:
- rainfall = increase vege = more fuel
- Warm dry weather in dry season –> vege dry up - more flmmable
- Strong winds provide more O2 - helps fire burn
Fire behaviour:
- creeping fires move across ground slowly
running fire - spread rapdilu and more intsne
- Throw out burning debris - help spread
Human a Natural vauses of fire?
natural:
- lighting
- volcanicn eruptions - hot lava / ash
Human:
- dropping ciggaertess , campires BBQ , fireworks
- Arson - ptupsodlully
Politcal impacts:
- blame Gov - unrest
- Gov change fortest mnagment parctices e.g clearing vege to reudce fuel
Risk managmebt to reduce impacts wildfires?
Short term:
- put out fire
- dirveting away from steelmnets
- evac
LT:
prevention:
- pyublic eduactaion
- prodvude fire eaters to out out fires befire they ebcome out of cotrol
- Prepardenss:
- housholds having emegrncye plan/kit , qauothoriets make emegrcy shelters
- Adapattaion:
- using non-flammbale building materials, fire breaks (gaps tress ) around steelmenst to sto[p them spreaidng
