Infographic
An infographic is data that is sorted, arranged and presented visually. The visual display of data can take the form of charts, timelines, images, flowcharts, diagrams and more.
What is the intent of infographics
The intent is to present data simply in order to explain complex topics. Infographics can also be interactive, so that clicking on parts of the graphic draws data from a database and displays it to the user.
Interactivity at a basic level
At a basic level, interactivity is a dialog that takes place between a person and a computer program. For example, a person browsing the Web, interacts by clicking on a link which results in the display of a new web. Online games are usually thought of as allowing for a great amount of interactivity.
What does interactivity allow users to do?
Interactive media can lead users through content in an interactive way, where the user clicks to move from one type of media to another (from text, to a slideshow to a video).
Greater interactivity
Even greater interaction is evident in Web 2.0 where users can not only click to move from one place to another, but can also create content through wikis, blogs, discussion forums and virtual reality applications such as Second Life.
Lighting for Video: backlighting
Always avoid having the light source directly behind the subject. This is called backlighting, and produces a shot in which the subject is a silhouette.
Natural light
whatever light is available.
When are the best times to shoot outdoors?
The best times of day to shoot outdoors are in the early morning and late afternoon/early evening light, or at other times of day when the sky is cloudy and the sunlight is filtered. Try to avoid shooting when the sun is directly overhead because you will get deep shadows on people’s faces and on objects.
Net Neutrality
Open and fair internet; all access is even, no-one has an advantage. No one business should have an advantage in speed of delivery of web content—whether text, pictures, video.
Net neutrality is the practice of keeping internet service providers from offering tiered service and from being able to block out competition by restricting certain pipelines within the internet.
More on Net Neutrality
A system in which there are no government- or ISP-mandated restrictions with regard to the content, sites, platforms, equipment or modes of communication that user access
Relies on the theory that Internet users should be able to control the content that they access, and have a choice in which applications they use to view that content
Major providers claim that this would prevent them from providing quality network performance
What does a tiered service model refer to
The tiered service model refers to a proposed Internet structure in which telecommunications providers would divide internet traffic into different tiers. Under this system, sites that require more broadband, such as voice and streaming video sites for instance, which would be allotted higher speed tiers and would pay more for that.
Consumers may like tiered service model because. ..
As consumers, we may like that because our Netflix streams smoothly—but what about small businesses, who are providing streaming video? They cannot pay as Netflix has and can, so they are out of luck.Net neutrality would not allow a large company to pay to get its content delivered first or more quickly than a competitor, which would give it an unfair advantage.
Tired Service Model
A proposed Internet architecture in which telecommunications providers would divide traffic into different tiers
Sites that require more broadband would be allotted higher speed tiers
Allows providers to maintain a degree of control while still providing fast and unrestricted access to their users
Pixel
A pixel is a unit of visual representation of data in a digital image or graphic. Pixel’ is a word made up of two words PICTure ELement. In the book Journalism Next, Briggs describes a pixel as the visual representation of data in a digital image or graphic
Pixels in images.
A pixel is the single, smallest unit of color in an image. All images are like a rectangular grid of colors, and each cell in the grid is one pixel.
Storing pictures digitally:
In a digital camera instead of storing picture information on film, the information is digital. This means that at a core level, pictures are represented by combinations of ones and zeros. These combinations are used to define color and light. Each pixel is a particular combination and has particular color values
Megapixel
1 million pixels which are used to measure the power of a digital camera
Remix
A remix is a song that has been edited or completely recreated to sound different from the original version.
Why are songs remixed
to adapt or revise it for radio or nightclub play to create a stereo or surround sound version of a song where none was previously available to improve the fidelity of an older song for which the original master recording has been lost or degraded to alter a song to suit a specific music genre or radio format to use some of the same materials, allowing the song to reach a different audience to alter a song for artistic purposes
Rule of third
The rule of thirds requires that you break your frame into nine squares of roughly equal size. Try and align the subject of your photo along these lines and intersections and imagine the main image divided over these nine boxes.
Visual Story telling
Visual storytelling is the use of graphic design, infographics, still images, video and text to tell and story and convey information in an entertaining and informative way.
UGC stands for:
User generated content
User generated content
User generated content (UGC) is material on websites, and occasionally other media sources, that is produced by the users of the website. This is different than, for example, a website designed by a company that puts forth material produced by professionals. In UGC, it is the amateur, in most cases, who contributes the content.
Downfall of user-generated content
One of the challenges with user generated content is that it may be inaccurate or espouse opinions or beliefs that others find offensive. People who rely on UCG sites for information might get the wrong answers and not think to confirm the information since often the printed, or uploaded, word is treated as true simply because it is written. Writers can presume authority or expertise where they have none, and the reader may not always be able to discern the false from the true.
