What is one of the fastest eroding coastline in europe?
Holderness coastline
For the last 5000 years, how fast has the Holderness coastline been eroding?
1-2 meters per year
Range of heights and materials of cliffs on Holderness Coastline?
3-40 metres made of silts, sands, gravels and clays which erode easily through repeated landslide activity
Why is it crucial that the Holderness cliffs continue to erode naturally?
Because the material lost travels south and provides sand and gravel that maintains Spurn Head. Also further south, fine sand from the Holderness cliffs supplies the beaches in Lincolnshire. Therefore it would have serious knock on effects if the council were to prevent the cliffs from eroding
What is the SMP for most of the Holderness coastline?
No active intervention meaning the coast will be allowed to erode naturally execpt for a few key areas such as Hornsea, Withernsea and Mappleton
How many people do researchers estimate will be living on coasts that are likely to flood by 2050?
300 million
