what was the great reform act?
A
- expanded suffrage to people seen as lower class (ppl who owned smaller amount of land) - small landowners , tenant farmers shopkeepers
- result of industrial revolution = subsequent increased pressure for reform

Define suffrage/franchise
A
- the right to vote, in modern democracies suffrage is extended to all adult and no groups are excluded - otherwise the system would be seen as undemocratic

what is the 2nd reform act?
A
in light of chartist movements for ‘one man one vote’ the act , the act extended suffrage to all hosueholders and reduced the property threshold which was required to be eligible for voting.

A
- pressure by the suffragists and suffragettes swell as WWII extended suffrage to women , reducing the age limit on women’s voting. Continuing reform of suffrage.

A
- various movements united in 1897 by Millicent Fawcett creating the national union of women’s suffrage societies
- methods included writing letters , pamphlet and giving educational lectures, organising petitions and peaceful protests

A
- frustrated by lack of progress by Suffragists = women’s social and political union (WPU)
- founded by Emeline Pankhurst
- more direct action , violence and disruption of political meetings, buildings and going on hunger strikes in prison
