Q

Why are they useful?

A

Because geological media has different densities and elastic properties. The “moduli” express the elastic response of an earth material to small stresses controlled by rigidty

Q

What is an example?

A

Sandstone is not so rigid with smaller values of its elastic moduli, and will therefore deform easily to stress

Q

What is another example?

A

Crystalline rocks are rigid with large values of elastic moduli and will deform or strain much less in response to the same stress
