Seismic waves use Flashcards

Q

What attributes of seismic waves are useful to study earth’s structure and interior (6)?

A

The velocities at which different phases propagate. Expressed by the difference in arrival times of different phases at a seismometer station.
The change in propagation angle when seismic phases hit an interface in the earth where phase speed changes.
The amplitude of the different phases and their “attenuation” with propagation (how long lines are)
The frequencies of the different phases and their changes with distance of travel (amount of lines per second)
The polarity of the first P-wave arrival from an earthquake (whether the line moves up or down at first p-wave reading)
Changes in velocity with direction of propagation, known as anisotropy. This can happen in deformed or fractured rocks, respectively having crystal and fracture anisotropy- inner core has a lot of crystal anisotropy increasing speed that seismic waves travel
