What is Democracy?
*The term democracy refers to the government for the people, by the people and of the people.
*An important feature of any democratic government is the consent of the people.
*In a democracy, people participate in decision making through their elected representatives.
*Democracy can be practiced in a president system or a parliamentary system.
Why should people decide?
Why do we need universal adult franchise?
*Under the colonial rule, the people feared the British government and did not agree with many of the decision but faced grave consequences if they criticized these decisions.
*So after the independence of India in 15 August 1947, universal adult franchise helped the people share their opinion and help with decisions all over the country.
The take of point in a democracy is the idea of consent-justify.

How does every individual give approval of the government?
*After the independence of India, the universal adult franchise was established for this reason. It allows every citizen of India to vote for their elected representative and through these representatives they get to involve themself in decision making of the country.
Rajya Sabha.
*It’s also known as the upper house of the parliament and the council of states.
*The presiding officer is the Vice-president.
*The maximum members of the Rajya Sabha are 250 and the number of current members are 245.
*They are elected for a period of 6 years.
*238 members represent the states and union territories and the rest 12 are from distinguished personalities (journalist, scientist etc.) nominated by the president of India.
*The members of Rajya Sabha are indirectly voted by an electoral college by the electoral member of the legislative assemblies of the state.
*He/she must a citizen of India and aged 30 years or above.
*One-third of it’s members retire every year.
Lok Sabha
*It’s known as the lower house of the parliament and the house of the people.
*The presiding officer is the speaker.
*The maximum number of members are 552 and the number of members currently is 543.
*They are elected for a period of 5 years.
*The members are directed elected by the citizens of India through elections and all citizens above the age of 18 are eligible to vote.
*Each constituency elects one candidate to be their representative in the parliament and the person with the most number of votes become the member of parliament for that particular constituency.
*He/she must be a citizen of India and aged 25 years or above.
Coaliation meaning.
A government formed by 2 or more political parties working together.
Impeach meaning.
To official accuse a public official of committing a serious crime while still in office.
Repressive meaning.
Law based on force or pressure passed against the will of the people and to prevent the person’s right to criticize.
Question hour, elaborate.
*The parliament while in session begins with the question hour.
*This is an important mechanism as it helps elicit information about the working of the government.
*Helps the parliament control the executives.
*Asking questions is a crucial task to every MP and helps the government be alert to it’s own shortcomings.
*It helps us come to know the opinion of the people through their representatives.
*The opposition party plays a crucial role in the healthy functioning of a democracy as they highlight drawbacks and various policies of the government and mobilize popular support for their own policies.
*This is a key aspect of the functioning of the Indian democracy.
Unpopular laws. explain.
*A law that can be constitutionally legal and valid but can continue to be unpopular and unacceptable to people because they feel the intention behind it is unfair and harmful.
*Mandatory helmet law

*If a law favors one group and disregards the other it will be controversial.
*Article 370 state that the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir region get special rights over their territory. This includes the PR(Permanent Residence) status.
How does a bill become an act?
*A minister or MP will introduce the bill.
*The bill and it’s principles are discussed. It’s then referred to either a selected committee or to a house or to a joined committee of both the houses. Debate takes place at this stage.
*The bill is drafted with suitable modifications and placed before the house for a final discussion. In passing a bill, majority of the members must be present voting is mandatory. The bill is then sent to the other house for consideration.
*If a bill is passed by both the houses of parliament, it’s then sent to the President of India for their approval.
*Once it’s approved it becomes an act or a law.
What are the role of the parliaments?
To select the nation government, to control, guide and inform the government and law making.
