Why do boys underachieve - Globalisation (External) Flashcards

1
Q

What has globalisation resulted in for the manufacturing industry and how has this affected traditional male jobs ?

A

Globalisation since the 1980’s has meant that the manufacturing industries have relocated into developing countries (china)

Globalisation has therefore led to a decline in traditional male jobs in heavy industry (mining and manufacturing)

Q

Why are men having an identity crisis due to globalisation and the decline in heavy industry ?

A

Many boys now believe that they do not have a chance at getting a job and therefore have less motivation to get qualifications and ambition because they feel that they only have limited prospects.

Q

What has the collapse of the traditional male breadwinner due to poor job prospects meant for men ?

A

Some sociologists argue that the decline in heavy industry employment has led to an identity crisis amongst males

Collapse of the traditional male breadwinner role brought about my poor job prospects had led to a crisis of masculinity - and identity crisis for men who feel insecure about their masculine role

Q

What has the crisis of identity meant for mens attitudes and futures and how does this reflect attitudes towards school ?

A

The future seems bleak and to lack a clear purpose for many working class boys, and this curbs their ambition, and education seems like a pointless waste of time and they don’t see the point in working hard and trying to achieve.

Q

How do boys now look to construct a positive self image and how does this cause them to underachieve ?

A

This leads to boys attempt to construct a positive self image through laddish behaviour in attempts to draw attention to themselves, further contributing to their underachievement

Q

Evaluation on globalisation and the effect on males achievement ?

A
  1. Traditional manual jobs don’t require many qualifications so it’s unlikely that thus affected boys attitudes to qualifications
  2. Still these type of manual labour jobs around - the have not disappeared completely
  3. Feminists have argued this is exaggerated and that the ‘moral panic’ surrounding boys achievement is not useful and overlooks the disadvantages faced by girls and ethnic minorities
