Why? Disabled Flashcards
Disabled people are more likely to be unemployed
Some disabled people are physically or mentally unable to work. This will mean they are dependent on state benefits. However, disabled people find it more difficult to find work and face discrimination from employers.
Some employers do not think the disabled are capable of work and many fail to provide adequate resources and job opportunities for the disabled. E.g. failing to make adaptations to the working environment for disabled people. The prospect of employment for disabled people is made worse during a recession. For example, employment prospects for disabled people have been made worse by the government closure of Remploy factories in 2012.
Remploy is a government-owned company which provides employment for disabled people. Remploy workers were employed in enterprises that varied from furniture and packaging manufacturing to recycling electrical appliances and operating CCTV systems.
Disabled people have lower household incomes
Disabled people are often only able to find low paid, routine and menial jobs, with little prospects for career advancement. Disabled people also suffer from inadequate pensions in older age. As disabled people were either unemployed or employed in low income jobs during their working life, they will have found it difficult to save for old age and to invest in private pensions.
Moreover, disabled people may have particular health and/or social care needs that are costly: Harker found that the situation of disabled people is exacerbated by the fact that, on average, disabled people’s day to day living costs for basics such as special diets, mobility aids, care, heating costs and transport, are 25% higher than those of non-disabled people.
