social exclusion
Alcock found that disabled people were likely to have difficulty finding access to education, job opportunities, housing and holidays.
This means they are not able to live like the majority of people in society and may become socially isolated. Alcock also found that in a society that fails to adequately cater for the needs of disabled people, ‘participation in social activities and leisure pursuits will be restricted by reduced mobility. These factors lead to an overall reduction in the quality of life for disabled people.
Dependent on welfare benefits
Faced with only the prospect of low paid work, many disabled people experience a poverty trap and are better off living on benefits.
With restricted employment opportunities, disabled people can become fatalistic about the future and are forced into a state of dependency on state benefits. This condemns disabled people to a life with low income, with little prospect for future advancement
