1
Q

Why did the libs win

A

Boer war atrocities revealed-women and children in concentration camps, war was very expensive, portrayed conservatives in a bad light
Chinese slavery-in wake of Boer war, conservatives wanted to improve South African economy, Chinese slaves recruited for gold mines, lived in terrible conditions in labour camps, white emigrants could have been used

Education act 1902-extended provision, non-conformists did not like the funding of church schools and thought they would wither away

Lib-lab pact-ensured anti-conservative vote would not be split in only 30 constituencies. Ensured libs and labs would not face each other

Taff value judgement- conservatives lost support and showed disinterest in workers

Tariff reform-big loaf little loaf- chamberlain and conservators seen as greedy

First past the post system-would not have been a landslide and did not show true outcome

Campbell bannerman-first and only radical prime minister, supported working classes, social reform, home rule and free trade
United liberals over opposition of education and tariff reform acts
